AC G rebuild questions

First: We have all the books for the G, but when my dad went to install the crank and the pulley, he ran into 2 problems. First, the two brass washers don't want to stay in place-like the pin is too worn? But I see in the parts book, that the locating pin for these trust washers are "not serviced and not needed. So do we just put it together, and in doing so have the washers stay in place?

Two, is it correct that on the G there is only one way to put the main bearing caps on?

Thanks.

Rod caps always have to go on a rod one way on any engine. If your talking the total rod going one way it would be yes for the G.
I was able to use the pin with the new (thrust washers) without a problem. Not sure of your problem as stated.

Guess I'm not completely sure either: I'm in college at the University of Arizona in Tucson and Dad is in Phoenix. So let me retry/expand/clarify.

All I know is this:

After sending to crank out to be ground in May (getting it back in July) my Dad is now trying to put the crank back in in November.

He is not happy with the way the thrust washers go on the crank, the one closest to the pulley "doesn't stay in place" the way he thinks it should, which he attributes to "a pin being too worn". Do we just assemble it any way, or should he do something about this pin?

And the Main bearing Caps can only be tightened down one way, forcing the little "keeper tabs" on the bearings on opposite sides when we thought the "tabs" go on the same side. Basically, no matter what we do, Dad gets confused on this part.

Boils down to he knows what he's doing, but does it so infrequently he forgets too much of what he knows, and poor me, I'm too young to know much except how to use the computer enough to turn for help here.

The tabs go opposite each other, not on the same side. They are held in place when the crank pulley is tighten down. However I the pins must engage so they don't spin. I have a brand new set of thrust bearings (brass washers) if you need them. Bob

I think were ok for the washers, as i under stand it, they just didn't act like they were going to stay in the correct place. I think I'll get some pictures when I'm home for Thanksgiving and re post then.

There are several other things to watch for as well on those N series Continental engines. My niece goes to school there too. Send me an e-mail and I will send you some pointers. J.

They don't stay in place until you tighten up the crank jaw. That is also when you take readings for bearing thrust tollerances Bob
