G won't start

My grandfather purchased a G in 1955 new and it has been in the family since. It ran like a top until I stored it for 3 years because of a move to a city lot. My father quit running it because of a fuel leak and parked it in the corner of a barn. After it getting it back, I have rebuilt the carb, changed points, checked spark on all 4, and cleaned and drained the fuel system. The best I can get out of it is a chug, chug, chug. Any ideas of what to look at next?

If you have air, fuel and spark to the engine the right time, barring some major internal mechanical failure like maybe stuck valves, it will run. I'd suggesting checking the ignition timing and have another look at that carb rebuild job. Have you checked compression? Are you sure it's getting air? Are the air cleaner and sink-trap-like intake tube open? Will fuel run out of the carb when you turn the fuel on?

Are you sure all the fuel passages in the carb are clear? A good soaking (overnight/completely submerged with all "soft" parts removed) with a liquid carb cleaner may be in order.

I did the exact thing you did to yours, got it from grandfather who let it sit for 25 years. I rebuilt fuel and ignition but couldn't get it to run, old mechanic told me to PUT a squirt of oil in each cylinder then start it. It work for me, started right up and never had any other engine trouble.

You can tell if it is a fuel restriction carburetor problem real easy by spraying starter fluid into the carburetor. If it will run on light bursts of spray it is in the fuel delivery. If it doesn't then you start to prove out timing and compression. Sticking valves is part of compression. Also the firing order on the G 1342 not the usual Allis Chalmers firing order of 1243. One is closest to the radiator.

Oh crap, your right. Must be this stupid med I am on. I should have said number one is closest to the timing gear cover on the G.

Thanks for the help guys. I finally got it running yesterday. I had rebuilt the motor before parking it at my fathers. I was a bit aggravated that I couldn"t get it to fire. I started over timing and setting the points. I finally got it running at about 20 deg advanced off the timing mark. It still does not have the power that it used to, but we are getting there. Now I have to figure out why the carb is dripping gas (even after rebuild) down the intake tube.

I remembered my grandfather doing that after the g
set over the winter and I gave it a try yesterday.
It's running now.

Thanks

Sorry a bit more explanation. It's dripping a little gas when it is shut down. Closing off the tank stops it, but I can't leave it well enough alone. Ended up mowing about 2 acres yesterday.

The float needle is not seating in its seat. Not uncommon with the plastic tipped needles. When I have one like that I toss it in the can and put in an old solid brass needle. Some say you can tap on them to get them to match the seat making sure they are warm when tapping. The tips are of a plastic rubber which if hot they will melt. Hot being 250 degrees or more.
