Oil Pressure for D17 Series 1 30 or 80 lbs?

I have an oil pressure gauge that maxes out every time I start up the tractor. My assumption is the previous owner either installed the wrong one or the gauge is wore out. I am looking at replacement gauges and I see there are 30 lbs and 80 lb replacements. How do I know which one is right for the 1958 I have.

If I remember right the D-17 still had to low pressure oil system like many of the older A/C tractors so the 0-30 is the gauge you want.

It depends on which engine you have. Originally, the series 1 had the low pressure bypass type oiling system. 10-15 psi was typical. The full flow system is higher. They"re easy to identify. The bypass filter has threads like a Mason jar with a tube sticking up the center of the filter. The full flow system uses a spin on filter Fram PH8A equivalent. Sounds like your tractor may have had a newer engine retrofitted or the relief valve may be stuck.

If the filter is the old style which fits down over a tube, the pressure will be about 5 to 15 PSI.
This is the old low pressure by-pass system used by A-C since the 30s and was still being used on the early D-17s.
The newer D-17s used a more modern filter equivalent to the Ford FL-1A and the pressure should run about 25 to 35 PSI. This is the high pressure full flow system which better accommodates the stresses placed on the 226 engine"s higher RPMs and compression in the D-17.

BTW, the changeover took place with the Series I tractors at Ser. #19978. So....a series I could have either a low pressure or high pressure system depending on the production date.
