Can you ID this for me?

Great morning everybody !,, I am needing to decode this engine serial number ( 17-35236-M ) for possible use in my Allis Chalmers D14 backhoe/loader. It is a 4 cylinder gasoline that came out of a cotton picker, and have no idea what year it may be.
Can anybody help? Cubic inch,,??

Its the same motor as a D17, as told by the 17 part of
the SN. I dont know the cubic in without looking it up,
but its the same as the D17.

Now, as to putting it in the D14, I cant sayfor sure, but
I dont think it'll go in easy, as I think the bolt patten is
different, but I really dont know.

17 part designates it as a G226 (226 cu in ) 4 cylinder gas engine with a 4" bore and 4.5" stroke and a center thrust bearing. Based on the serial number it should be a full flow oiling system. It was primarily used in D17 tractors but also used in early Gleaner E combines and also used in some power units. If it came out of a combine it would have a mechanical fuel pump mounting location on the right side that would have to be plated off for a tractor application. The -M suffix designates the compression ration of 7.25:1 assuming the internals (sleeves & pistons) are original.

Will not be a bolt up to any D14/D15 tractor or the industrial/backhoe equivalents. Those used 149/160 engines. Mike

I had my fingers crossed on this one, hoping it would work for me but looks like No Dice.
Well, back to looking for another donor engine for my project.

Depending on where you are and how much you want, I might be interested in the 17 motor if you can"t use it. Cant help you with a 14 or 15 motor. Ed

Hey AceD,, I'm in southeast NM. Where are you? I do not own the said engine, I was goin to buy it if I could have used parts such as head, oil pan, rods etc.
The guy had quoted $200 and I told him I would give $175 if not locked up. He said it was running when he pulled it out of a cotton picker 12 years ago. I tried to turn it over with a 24" pipe wrench, and no luck. I can send you some pics if you want and be glad to dicker with him for you.
I'm goin back in the next day or so to let him know the 17 will not work for me, but he also has two 6 cylinder Allis Chalmers engines AND one 4 cylinder diesel,,,, I want to look at the diesel he has to see if maybe I can do an old hot rod trick and marry the diesel where the 149 was,,,,???? I know wishful thinking maybe, but am interested in the diesel torque over the gas job.
Do you, by chance, know what years the 4 cyl diesel was produced and what equipment it was used in?? I will get the serial numbers for all the Allis engines he has if somebody else is interested.

I"m in Louisiana - too far to be practical and I don"t really need a stuck engine even at that price. I already have a stuck D17 engine - hence the interest.

As to the 6 cyl AC - most likely off a combine or similar - there was a gas 6cyl based on the buda 6cyl diesel used in WD45 & D17.

As for the 4 cyl diesel - there you may be in luck - I am pretty sure there was a D15 diesel but I don"t have that info with me right now. I"ll try to find details tonight.

D15 Diesel was 175 ci 4cyl - 3.5625 bore x 4.375 stroke - introduced in D15 Series I but same engine continued to Series II - it did not change displacement like the gas D15. If you are lucky enough to find one, it probably would bolt in to a D14 or D15 with minor if any mods.

Hey Ed,,, Man,, you got me salivating there for a while, my friend,,,thinking I was goin to power the tractor with a diesel. So, I go out there and look, and look and look for the 4 cylinder diesel he told me had,,,,,,,,,but all I find is a 6 cylinder diesel with a turbo,,,but no 4 cylinder diesel. RATZZZ. called him back but he did not really know if it was a 6 or a 4,,!!!

I went ahead and got what numbers I could if any body here has an interest in them. He has two 6 cylinder gas engines and one 6 cylinder diesel with a turbo.

Hey AceD,, Do you know what the letter designations are for the 4 cylinder diesels that will work on the D14? I downloaded a list of engine serial numbers but list does not identify which are gas or diesels. I'm not having much luck locating a 149 gas engine so maybe a 4 cyl diesel be easier to locate,,,??
I'm goin to go ahead and take the 149 block out of tractor so I can assemble on a stand should I ever find the parts. thanks Joe r

I've never seen one in person - i think they are much more rare than the gas engines. As for designation I would guess it could be a D175 since time frame was similar to G226 etc. As to markings on block, I think the D15 gas engines were stamped 15- plus serial number with suffix on edge of flange on left side where attaches to trans housing. I'd look for something starting or ending with D.

Can you ID this for me?
