my wd turns hard, but it only does it when you turn the wheel a little bit, than it becomes impossibly hard to turn( takes both hands on 1 side of the wheel) the u joint is good and free and the pedastil has a bunch of fresh grease in it it does it standing and moving, doesnt matter

Sounds like the bearings are bad on your worm gear
shaft inside your pedestal. Not a terrible job to
replace.

Can also be the bearing and race in the lower end of the pedestal. It"s been hammered for decades, doesn"t turn much, but gets hit with very jolt on the front end. Over time, the race "scallops" out. All worn parts make steering harder.

I just rebuilt dads WD45. There are 2 bearings in the wormgear shaft. The bearings are easy to get, but the outside diameter of the races are larger than a standard race, ordered them from NAPA. The seal on the wormgear shaft is a 4 piece seal, only available fron AGCO. It consists of 2 metal cups and 2 pieces of cork, The 2 metal cups cost me 30.00 each. The bottom bearing and 2 seals were only available from Agco. The dealer recommended cornhead grease in the gearbox. I think I'll scoop it out and fill it with SAE 90 gear lube, or perhaps chain saw bar oil. It still steers hard. I pulled the whole front end off the tractor and replaced all the bearings and seals, wish I had replaced the ujoint while I had it apart. 60 year old grease stinks, have plenty of cleaning rags and cleaning solvent around.

Don't waste your money on that cork seal from Agco. I used a
standard lip seal on my WD-45. Only costs a few dollars and
will last a long time. Any industrial bearing supply store should
be able to get you any size seal you need.

I took the seal and bearings to several different places, the only place I could get the seal from Agco. No 1 piece seal was to be found here.

It's hard to believe that the steering shaft(same as kingpins) could be seized up like they can on a truck but I guess it could happen. Might drop tie rod ends and check. LeonCMO
