do any of you guys know if I can place a hose heater style in the lower radiator hose on a D-17. I do not see a block freeze plug anyplace. I'm trying to get it to start a little easier in winter. This one has a gas engine. Thanks ahead of time.

No reason you could not put one in the lower hose unless there just isn't enough room to do so

Like old says....other option is a tank heater on the side of the engine. IDK of any frost plug options. Tank htr worked fine for me on multiple tractors. Hint- hard to find large wattage htrs now, so many only 850 watts. Go to a salvage yard and cut off of old cars. Fill with water, plug in, in a few seconds you can hear them cook if they"re ok. Likely to get them for the asking.

LH heaters work best when there is a 10-15 rise to the hose, pointing up to the motor. I had a D-19 diesel, put a tank style one on the side of the motor, from the block drain, up to the thermostat bypass hose. If you go the tank heater route, remember to mount it straight up, or it'll burn up from lack of thermosiphon flow.
