i finely got my carb to quit running gas all over but now it choghs and coughs black smoke if i open the gas valve more than a quarter turn. runs good if i just crack it open.. whats going on now?

also my starter has been grinding more and more when i took it out you can see it was hitting the back of the flywheel how do i adjust it with just 1 screw holding it in?

If you are refering to the gas valve under the tank, you either have the wrong jet in the carb or you didn't put the venturi back in the carb.
The starter grind sounds like a worn ring gear. To repair that you must split the tractor, and either replace the gear or remove it and turn it 180 degrees. LOL Bob

Would help to know what tractor you have since just because you us 53CA as a handle you could have others. Black smoke says running way to rich so you still have a carb problem

ring gear loooks good the grind is on the back of it. like the starter is to close to the block. i tried to taper the teeth on the starter a little more and seemed to help a little but still marinal better. seems like it needs a shim between starter and block. was told my 12 volt on is spinning the 6 volt starter to fast and hard?

as for the carb theres no adjment on this one. yes ventra is in there.. would float be a little high?

I have a 12V battery with a 6V starter and no issues. You just can't run the starter too long as it will burn out quickly. I think spacing is the issue here.

Do you have a idle mixture adjustment? What 'gas valve' do you refer to? If this is the one under the tank then my guess is that you have real carb trouble! I would suggest removing the carb for a full clean and inspection. What make is the carb on your tractor?

Again I will ask what tractor hard to help you help your self with out enough info.
That said yes a bad float or a sticking one or set wrong will cause that as will a air cleaner that needs to be serviced

It is my ca allis, the shut off on the tank is what i was talking about. there is no mixture screw on the carb will try pulling it apart and adjusting the float a little more. air cleaner was pulled off tractor before, put in was tank and blowen out.

any other ideas on what to do with the starer?

Starter needs to be taken apart and the proper washers put in the drive end. Should be 3 to begin with, maybe have to add another.

When I start The RPM"s keep going higher like it wants to blow-up.
Can the governor linkage be disconnected from the carbuator and manualy operate the idle?

Any help is greatfull

Thanks
