Gemmer Steering Gear Box in a CA

Hello
The Ross box in the CA has a very worn worm gear (razor sharp) and we found a Gemmer box that appears to fit. The problem is once you put resistance on the Gemmer it is very hard to turn. We took the box apart and the gears and bearings look to be in pretty good shape. We reassembled and adjusted all tolerances and it still turns very, very hard. Can a C be that much easier to steer than a CA? Any thoughts on what we're missing or will it not work? Thanks for any responses. Brent

The Gemmer would be a good replacement. They work good when properly adjusted. After you prove that the hard turning is in the Gemmer you just need to keep adjusting until you find the correct place. I play with the eccentric until I find the smoothest place. I do like the CA Ross better when they are not wore out.

It does not turn that easily either but just turning the arm I have no reference what it should be. Once we found the worn worm gear we started focusing on that as the problem never to think that it still could be a symptom. However that being said, we took the Gemmer back off, put it in a vice, disassembled and reassembled and adjusted till it turns very smoothly with no resistance in the vice but once you put a little resistance on the output shaft it almost looks up the steering wheel. So from the response above we should just keep adjusting and it should start to turn easy? We certainly need to dig into the front some more too but I’d like to at least get the steering gear to work first.
