1 wire alt on a WD 45

I have a WD 45 that came with a 1 wire alternator when I bought it. The alternator normally works well but when the tractor sits for a long time I need to jumper 12 volts to one of the spade terminals on the alt to get it to start charging. This is after reving up the tractor and still getting no charge. Since I have a key switch, can I just run a power wire from the switched side of the key to the spade terminal or will constant power (only when the key is on) hurt the alternator? Otherwise I could wire in a pushbutton to give a momentary supply of power if constant power is no good.

You maybe able to wire it up like a 3 wire but that is the only way I would ever do it. It should have 2 spade terminals one marked 1 and 2. The wire from the #2 goes to the big charge wire stud and then with a diode or some such thing the #1 goes to the ignition switch. I use Radio Shake 276-1661 diodes for that sliver line towards the alternator
