WC Unstyled serial number cutoff

Does anyone know of any WC that was fitted with styled tinwork at the factory before 1939? A buddy of mine just picked up a WC from the family that purchased it new. The serial number says its a 1938 but it has styled tinwork with the Allis Chalmers decal on the frame rail like the unstyled models.

WC74330 was the first styled tractor in 1938 but at the changing point any parts (like stickers) might have been used just to get rid of them.

My Dad"s older styled WC was sn 77717, as I remember. That makes it a 1939, but he always called it a 1938. He was a farmer/dealer back then....said he kept the last one he ordered. Had 24 inch rears, no muffler, just a straight pipe angled out the side.

Jamie....With that serial it shouldn't have the styled look. It's possible but unlikely they used a rear meant for an earlier tractor. Look for the serial on the engine. This a long with the tractor serial will help with the identification as it's possible the rear was changed due to mechanical failure.

You say 1938 but not s/n - there were just under 900 styled WCs late in the 1938 model year

The generally accepted changeover point was late 1938 beginning 74330. Check your S/N as well as engine S/N and post it here. I guess its possible that an earlier tractor may have been set aside due to a problem and completed with new sheetmetal, but I would think it would have to be close to the changeover point.

Other possibility is dealer changed over if it was obsoleted inventory or if buyer wanted new style - I know Case dealers repainted a few earlier orange tractors to the 2-tone gold/orange to make them more appealing - typical buyer might not want to pay full price for last years tractor.

Or could be a user modification.
