Allis wc rear axel reversing old forklift

Hello I am working on a wc. It was a reversed forklift tractor and turning it back into a normal forward driving tractor. I have read that you can flip the rear end gear and make it drive back with the normal 4 forward speeds. But you have to split it and then pull the axels out to flip the gear. I have it split and the final drives off but I cannot get the rear axels to budge to pull out. Is there a special tool or am I missing a step, thanks for any info.

Did you loosen the brake drum lockscrew?
