I'm on my way to look at a WD45 and I was wondering what to check besides the usual things you would check on any other tractor. Any advise will be appreciated.

Check the hand clutch and make sure it lock back like it should. Also be sure the engine does not have the bolt on plate on the right side of the engine because if it does then it is a WD not a WD45

check the serial number to be sure which it is,,,, wiggle the clutch pedal for play side to side,,,check the steering for play , and then usual things like oil pressure and how it runs

Look for rust around the rear rim valve stems. Cashy to replace. If you plan on using any implements, make sure the hydraulic pump works and that the lift arms go up/down. Agree with others as well.

Check and see if it has the spin out wheels or if they put combine rims on it. Check and see if you have front and back block stops on each wheel.

Ok, thanks for all your help. Now here is what I found. Yes, it does have the bolt on plate on the right side of the motor. It has a new radiator and the water pump is yellow instead of orange. So is the dist. and governor, guess they were off a different tractor or they were rebuilt and painted the wrong color. It has shutters on the radiator and a little crank out the right side of radiator shell. I tried to turn the shutters open but it just spins around like it's not connected. I ran the motor for about 1/2 an hour and got her up to temp but I forgot to look at the shutters. The rims are in need of repair from rust but I think I can fix them. I shook the front of the tractor side to side and front end seems to be tight, no play or slop at all. The back tires are fair condition and have lots of tread. It does seem to steer hard. The hand clutch works and so does the PTO. The foot clutch worked ok just driving it around and none of the gears had any noise. I didn't check the pedal for side to side play. After running for half an hour it showed about 180 degrees and more then half on the oil pressure gage. In general it seemed to run fair, just a little rough at first but it smoothed out as it warmed up. So, I guess it's a WD and not a WD45. It has had work but that's not unusual for it's age. I have a pretty good feeling about it. Is there much difference between WD and WD45? I'm wanting to pull a 3 bottom plow. Will this tractor handle it? The hyd. lift was smooth and quick. It has an AC blade on the hitch and it looks heavy duty and in real good shape.

Definitely a WD. There is a long list of differences, but the only one that really counts is an extra 1/2" of stroke on the crank. 201 cubes on a WD, 226 on a WD45. It's a simple swap to put a WD45 crank in a WD, so that may have been done. As for a 3 bottom? Should pull 3-14" ok depending on soil and plow depth, but 2-14 or 16 would probably be better. A WD45 would do better with 3-14" and 3-16" would be no real problem either.

If it is a narrow front check for wear on the front spindle assembly. The front end rests on a tapered bearing and the up and down movement from wear may wear grooves in the bearing race and cause the bearing to turn in the shaft. The costly repair is to replace the spindle assembly and the bearing along with the rectangular key. It is quite possible that the shaft will have to be replaced. I knurled the shaft where the bearing fit and shimmed the key.
