wd45 alternator

I recently purchased my first ac.its a wd 45. Ir has a 12 volt battery amd alternator.I tried to start it and the battery was dead.while checking the wiring I found the two wired to the alternator were un hooked.on this system it has positive ground. Does the positive feed from the alternator go to the amp meter gauge or does the ground. Any advice is helpful
 
99% of alternators are - ground and if hooked up + ground you fry the alternator so you got your self a problem and as is will drain the battery in 5 minute or worse
 
OOPS, If the tractor is Pos ground and a Neg ground (like most unless special ordered) alternator was hooked up, it may be fried !!!!!!!

For a Neg ground tractor and Neg ground alternator, yes the big main output stud wires to the ammeters load terminal......

I didn't get it hooked up yet.I have a single post alternator without the plug.I was told I can just hook the post to the battery post and it will do the same for charging.does neone have a schematic for juat a single post
 
those are called "single wire alternator"... the two smaller wires are not needed. There job is done internal to the alternator by using power from the single wire.
I have never heard of a single wire positive ground alternator, but could be. You need to deetermine what you have before you connect. You cant have the case grounded to the frame, and the power cable connected to the negative terminal of the battery...positive ground... Something will burn up
 
A single wire alternator is wired just like the picture. You just dont have the two smaller wires and signal voltage resistor on your system.
 
I changed it over to negative ground. I found papers and posts that said by changing the wires around on the coil it would change to negative ground. And that those old starters didnt matter which way it was hooked up because they didn't have fixed magnets.have u ever heard of this.I don't really wanna burn the tractor up.but I could rebuild the starter if need be
 
Your on the right path. Switching the wires on the coil will make it last longer. Starter will not have a problem. Main thing is the battery. DONT connect the alternator up unless the negative cable is grounded and the positive cable goes to the starter / solenoid / ect. see the drawing.
