Have D17 gas that starts & runs great. Has plenty of power butafter running 15-20 seconds it starts smoking terrible. Could head gasket be leaking internally? Could it have just simply broke an oil ring? Any ideas or suggestions?

What color is the smoke???If green you have a lepricon in you engine if black it is running to rich {to much fuel } if white this is oil, several things could cause oil smoke, It could be as simple as a valve adjustment, valve guides worn or it could just be wore slap out... Does or is the breather plugged or blow out smoke or oil??? Many questions ...need more info.....

If it sat for a year good chance you have water in the oil from condensation and also some condensation in the cylinder. Check the oil and make sure it is not real milky looking. If it is not take it out and make it work hard for an hour or so and see if the smoke clears up

If it"s been sitting it would likely has a ring sticking, Would explain it taking 20min to start smoking, Poor some diesel mixed with steering fluid, "I think" the old timers could tell you better what to use, but i think thats right...Sure was hoping the smoke was green$^^%)%0

It has been my experience white smoke is caused by coolant, blue is oil, and fuel is black. So possible cracked block or leaking head gasket.

have you done a oil change recently? I changed the oil in a w6 which never smoked, I used 10w30 and after it smoked. I was puzzled.... I changed the oil back to w30 oil and the smoking stopped!
it did not like the detergent oil!
that was 10 years ago, it still does not smoke!
good luck, worth a try.
