Homelite Garden Tractor T-16H shift lever fix

The shift lever on my Homelite T-16H (1973) is completely "loose" and does not do anything when rotated. It also moves freely "in-and-out", also without doing anything. The transmission is currently in the "drive" mode, with the transmission engaged, and I cannot move the tractor freely without the engine running. I have not verified that the transmission functions normally in the "drive" mode, as I have not tried to start the engine since purchasing it due to other issues (electrical wiring verification and starter-generator belt replacement). I think the "hydrostatic" transmission is a "Vickers" transmission, according to information posted on "GTTalk.com" for Homelite tractors made by Allis Chalmers in Lexington, SC in the early "seventies". Thanks in advance for any help or information.
