WD Manifold Studs

Well, I got the manifold off ok and one stud came out with the nut and I discovered it goes into a water passage!
The front exhaust port on the manifold had no sign of a seal, either the gasket or the metal retainer! The manifold looks very good though and the gasket failed all at once after years of service and I noticed the sound when it failed right away. I think a new gasket set will be all I need.
The studs at either end of the manifold showed signs of erosion or wear and I want to replace them. They see the most heat and do not want to come out and I need some advice on how to attack them. Do I heat the head with a torch around the stud first? The only stud remover I have is an old Craftsman job that I have never used. Any tips will be depreciated!

I replaced all the studs on my WD 45 with hard bolts of the proper length, with a hard washer under each bolt head.

I use Black Gasket-Maker on the threads.

As for the gaskets, I rub Hi-temp Silicone into the asbestos, stick the gaskets into the metal cups and stick them onto the manifold runners.

Makes an easier way to install them and I think the gaskets last longer this way.

You don't want to make the mounting bolts overly tight on the ends, the manifold needs to be able to slip as the manifold expands and contracts.
Graphite might be good on the side next to the Head..

I have several stud extractors and rarely use them except on large studs.
I pulled the studs on both my WD and WD-45 and some twisted off but all of them had a good portion sticking out of the head.
I was successful in pulling them with a set of "real" Peterson Vice-Grips.
I did not have to resort to heat.

I prefer to heat the head rather than the bolt. Bolt heats too quickly, head provides latent heat to let the wax melt in and loosen the bolt. Use sealant on the bolt that goes into the water jacket.
