" good chance the thermostat is bad or sticking "

G's don't have thermostats.

First off, be sure your water level is all the way up covering the neck leading back down to the head, if it's low, it will not circulate or cool, be sure the fan is pulling air across the radiator and that the belt isn't loose.
How are you deciding it's running hot?

The engine was rebuild and the builder had it for 2yr. When I had it running it would not run for over 15mins, then it would stop and I would have to wait to start it again. I felt the head and seemed too hot and the coil was also hot. Drained the cooling system and found A-corns in the system, flushed out the system and had radiator baked, but is still getting hot. ? would a 8-volt battery in a 6-volt system over charge the coil?
