How to re-install the drive axle on a 170 AC tractor

I cannot slide the last 2 inches of the shaft into the gear box area. As far as I can see inside the shaft encloseur , their looks to be a ring or the gear that slides into the shaft has dropped a hair which I think is stopping it from going any further. I tapered the shaft end , thinking it may slide in , no luck for two weeks in trying.

Are you putting the main axle back on to the rear end housing? Or the final drive gear on the outside of the axle housing?

If it is the main axle on the rear end housing you might have some diff bearing carrier issues if it is dropping.
