AC 190 (gas) needs ether to start most times

My gas AC 190 will usually pop and try to start running, but won't catch... After the first attempt, any subsequent attempts to start result in no pop at all, engine just spins. A shot of ether and it will fire right up and run fine.

It acts like it's not getting enough gas when starting, but once running does not exhibit any fuel starvation symptoms at all.

The engine is a bit tired and burns oil, but it does this even after putting in fresh plugs (taking oil fouling out of the picture).

The tractor is still fairly new to me... My other is a '50 8N. Any ideas on what to check?

Pull the choke and then remove the air cleaner pipe
or hose at the carburetor. My guess is you will find
it isn't pulling the choke completely shut.

Things I would check first (all of these cost zero dollars):
a) +1 on Butch's post. Pull the breather tube/hose and veryify choke butterfly is closing fully with linkageage/cable.
b) I would check/adjust the valve tappet clearances.
c) I would check ignition timing.

I would assume either low compression or choke not closing all the way.

That is a bad way to start all the time. You will break something sometime.

Good suggestions... as soon as things slow down a bit, I'll pull it in the shop and do some poking around at the things you all mentioned.

It runs great once it's started, good power, etc. Moved 35 round bales with it yesterday evening.

(quoted from post at 03:27:40 06/23/13) Fixed it - the choke cable clamp had worked loose.

Thanks again!

Thanks for telling us what the solution was. I always check all the free to do stuff first.

FWIW: I have run many tired oil burners in my day - from lawnmowers, to cars, trucks, and even tractors. Never had an issue using any of them for what I needed them for. Simply kept them topped off with oil and used em.
