have trouble with d17 not wanting to shut off after warmed up. put new points, plugs, wirers on any ideas would be helpfull

You say shut down but are you saying it keeps running. Or are you saying it is dieseling??.
If dieseling then you have carbon build up in the cylinders and your not letting it idle before you shut it down. Try adding a qt. of ATF to 3 or so gal of gas and run it.
Now if it is not shutting off with the switch and it keeps running like normal then you switch maybe bad or you have a wiring problem

Assuming you are talking Gasoline engine....

Have you installed an Alternator..?

If so, it may be Back-Feeding_ the ignition and won't let the engine die if the idle is not very Low..
A Diode can be used to eliminate that..

I second the comment about letting the girl idle down and rest a bit before turning it off. Same goes for puting some fuel conditioner to clean out the fuel system and cylinders a bit.
