Appears all good-tried on car battery also, won't turn over. Bought this tractor from a guy who'd replaced the motor and it's all in fine shape. No idea why this starter won't turn over...Can field coils just fry out?

How can I figure out what's wrong?

What is F and A marked on the starter? It's a Delco 1101980 4031 is on the starter...

What you have is a starter/generator. The F is the field and the A is the armature. The A post is much heavier and that wire runs to the start relay/selinoid. If you jump from a known good battery Black to ground and red to the heavy A, your starter should turn over. If it does, then your problem is between the battery and the ignition switch, the switch itself, or from the ignition to the start relay, or the relay itself.
I don't think that you have any safety switches on a B12 like on the newer models. LOL Bob

I should have known better...I'd done work on my 8N's starter. Took another look at the armature and it needed some cleanup. There were some grooves in it from the brushes, which I filed just a touch as there was a ridge on them. Then I took emery cloth and sanded the commutator and then finally, cleaned out the mica. It now works, and, stops.

Simple test-ground the s/g, and then touch hot to the A, and it should run up, then touch F, and it stops. That's normal...thanks
