Antifreeze in oil and jumping out of thrid gear

I have an C allis that I would like to save.I"m getting antifreese in the oil. I took thr valve cover off and there was no evidence of antifreeze on top of the head. The engine goes not puff white smoke. What you recommend me check next?

It also jumps out of third gear. I assume that the gear is shot. but is there a possibility that it could be something else?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Drop the pan and see if the sleeve o-rings are leaking. The dropping out of 3rd could be the end of the shifter ball is worn and not fully getting the gears meshed right. I know some of the other models had that issue. Can be fixed by welding and grinding on the end of the shifter.

I have a 1945 A that has accumulated some antifreeze in the oil for years. I always said I should look into it further but I eventually put a small petcock on the drain plug of the pan.
I simply drain the oz or two out of the pan if its been sitting a while.
The cheap way to deal with it.

We had that 3rd gear problem on a "c" and got by with making a rubber band out of old inner tube and wiring it on somewhere close and would slip it on the shifter when in 3rd to hold it in gear. You don't use 3rd gear that often unless you want to get somewhere quickly.
Antifreeze in the oil can turn out badly because I had a rod bearing spin and ruin a Crankshaft(not Allis) and now it going to cost a lot to fix. Would of been a simple fix when just the water pump was bad and was leaking. Getting by will come back to haunt you sometimes. Changing the oil more often might get you by for a long time but that last time you get by is kind of a downer.cleddy

Hi,

I took off the oil pan and left the tractor sit for a couple of days. I didn't notice any obvious leaks aroung the cylinders. But it did seem to drip a little on the front side of the engine. I was wondering if there was an frost plug in the front of the engine? The frost plugs on the top of the head looked dry. Any suggestions what to check next?

thx Dave
