Hi. The water pump on my WD45 doesn"t seem to be circulating water any more. I had all kinds of steam coming out of the radiator last time I ran the tractor, and sounds from inside the engine weren"t very encouraging when I turned it off. Before I spend money on a new pump, I thought I would ask the people on this list if there is there a way to test the water pump to be sure it"s bad? Also, I"ve been looking at prices for a new pump and I"m seeing prices anywhere from around $75 to $200. Why is there such a big difference? What should I be looking for in a new pump? Any advice y'all have would be appreciated.

The only water pump problems I've ever had were bearing/seal failures.
Seems that I did hear of someone having an impeller loosen up once but that would be an extremely rare occurence.
Is your thermostat opening up?
Is your belt slipping?
Is one of your hoses collapsing or does it have an obstruction?
Does the radiator need flushing?
With the cap removed, and the engine up to temperature, you should see the water circulating.
But....if it is not, it could also be due to a stuck thermostat.
Like I say, I've never had a waterpump simply stop working.
You could possibly have a leaking head gasket which will push water out of the overfill tube but that would be very obvious.
Good luck and let's hope you don't have to buy a waterpump.

Had the same problem a couple years ago with my cousins WD45, if your radiator is full and you have no circulation then it's either the water pump gone bad or you have a stuck thermostat. remove the thermostat and check it to see if it is stuck, put the thermostat in a pan of water, put a thermometer (I use my wifes candy thermometer cause it clips to the pan) in the water and heat it slowly on the stove, watch the thermostat and see what temp. it begins to open at, should be around 180 degrees. if the thermostat is good then it's most likely the water pump assuming your radiator is clean and not plugged. I bought a water pump for my cousins WD45 from Yesterdays Tractors and it's still working.
Most of the time when a water pump goes bad it does so in such a way you have a leak. Not often they go bad any other way and I have never seen one go bad in any other way. That said yes it can happen but I would check things like the thermostat and for a badly clogged up cooling system before jumping on that water pump
I'd bet anything but the pump.If the shaft is not loose and wobbly , it's working .Even if it leaks , the impeller is still turning and trying to circulate the water . I'd bet on stuck thermostat or plugged radiator tubes. You can flush the rad. with vinegar or other acid based products.....
