Leaking Head Gasket on D17 Gas

Have above tractor, ser. # 13027 that has a leaking gasket. It starts good, runs good, but has white smoke in exhaust and bubbles on top of head gasket edges. No anti-freeze in the oil. Would you ever just try pulling head and putting a new gasket on without fluxing head. Wanting to just bring this abandoned tractor to where it runs, drives, can be used everyday for light acreage work. Not tillage, but blade, loader work. Thanks, Rod

Its been done many times, just give everything a good looking over when you get it apart. They made different head gaskets for different D17's, just make sure and get one the right thickness.

Rodney - having the exact same issue on my Series III. I got my head off and you can clearly see the leak path from the coolant passages to the cylinders. Mine too had no coolant in the oil, just white smoke on start-up and gradual loss of coolant.

Clean up both surfaces very well. Check flatness on the head and block with a straight edge. Use a feeler gauge to check that the sleeves have the correct amount of standout from the block. I will be using a Felpro gasket to replace mine. I plan to use copper coat spray when putting mine back together. The prior person used the old aluminum paint routine and it will be a mess to clean up. Torque the head per the manual, set valves cold, warm it up, re-torque head and set the valves again warm then the cover can go back on. Mike

I have a head gasket issue on a WD (white smoke on start up, mysterious loss of coolant, and white bubbles in the radiator after running for awhile). My plan was to pull the head and just replace the gasket (provided nothing looks wrong elsewhere). I had no plans to go much further than that. I just use the tractor for some garden work and shredding is all. So no, I don't see anything wrong with just replacing the gasket and re-torquing everything and setting the valves.
