I looked at a agco allis 6690 one of these at a local dealer and the salesmen told me it was air cooled is that a bad thing with a 87 hp tractor like that or not have people had good luck being air cooled or not.

We have a 6690 we bought new. We take very good care of our equipment and have had no trouble with the air cooled motor. As Cowman stated, use air to blow off the oil cooler and engine heat fins and you are good to go!! Also these engines use oil as a coolant so make sure you keep it maintained. I can mow our pasture in August when its in the upper 90s and she runs cool as can be. Gleaner combines of that era used the air cooled motors also. Some owners loved them for their fuel economy and reliability and other owners cursed them. Most unhappy owners were the ones with the poor maintenance.

i have deutz air cooled but believe 6690 made by same. if it is chore tractor make sure it starts easily with aid of air intake manifold heater or glow plug. i have to use hair dryer and battery boost when below 10 degrees but can also get it to start but is time consuming.
