WC Questions

I just bought my first 1947 WC project tractor with battery ignition. Its not running. It has 60-70 lbs compression on all four cylinders. The PO showed me that it had spark with a good battery that was not included with the sale. Rather than buy a 6 volt battery, I prefer to convert to 12 volt using a good Delco alternator and 12 volt battery I already own.I've looked through the archives for a wiring diagram but did not find one. Can someone send me a comprehensive wiring diagram.(3 wire conversion) Other than replacing the coil, are there other components that need to be upgraded too. I also need a muffler. Is the OEM style under hood type available anywhere? How interchangeable are the carburators, between WC and WD, Zenith and Marvel Schebler. Any alterations required? Thanks for your help.

With compression like that I would start by filing the cylinders with ATF.
As for the wiring that is easy the big charge connection goes top the amp gauge the plug with the #2 goes to that stud and the #1 goes to the ignition side of the ignition switch or to the coil either will work. You will need a diode like the radio shack 276-1661 in the #1 wire line towards the alternator. As for the coil you can use a ballast resister like the O'Reilly's VR-1 instead of replacing the coil.
As for the carb the WC and WD use the same engine and same carbs etc

The original one on Dad"s 1947 was under the hood- short, squat oval, stuck up just a few inches above the hood, and gassed me while cultivating corn in the mid 50s! I was about 14, got tired, laid down in the field, folks noticed the tractor hadn"t moved for awhile, quarter mile from home.....came to investigate, and woke me up. Older WC had the side discharge, straight pipe, 1938 model.

I like to use a 20 ohm resistor or an idiot light in series with the # 1 wire and not wire it direct or use a diode. The reason is that if you happen to leave the key on with engine not running, the battery won't be drained near as fast. The stator drain will be about 10 time less.
