I do not remember if I used a screen form a ford type of if I used a pipe to pipe part to do it. Of course your many be older then the one I have and have a different sediment bowl set up but a pipe to pipe adapter would do the same thing

I picked-up a gallon of Evapo-Rust at the TSC store Sunday. It sounded like a miracle product that you use to react with rust and form a compound that stays in contact with the tank and would not float once you had all loose scale and rust out of the tank. It must be a stable product because it says it can be saved and reused.

I open the inside hole in the threaded end of the fitting and insert an short length of 1/4" OD tubing 1.5" to 2" long. This raises the point of entry and prevents the junk from getting into the bowl. Some people also roll up a short piece of fly screen and insert into the hole in the tank fitting. This also acts as a screen

I did the same thing to the fuel cutoff valve on my Ferguson TO-35. The original cutoff had some type of screen built on it, but the cheap aftermarket units do not.

I just trimmed down a piece of copper tube and stuck it into the inlet on the cutoff, so it would pickup fuel higher in the tank,

so far, along with an inline fuel filter, inline from cutoff to carb, it has worked well for the last few years.

You also might try this. Pour a quart of ATF in the tank and if it is off shake it some then drain. Let ti sit over night before you drain it. The ATF may help break the rust etc down and then help you drain it out
