Today I was helping a friend tow a CA to see if it would turn over, he had filled the cyclinders with WD 40 and let them soak. At first the tires slid when letting the clutch out in 3rd gear, using the foot clutch a few times I tried the hand clutch and all it did was slide, pulled it a bit more and the rear wheels turned wiwth the tractor in gear but the engine did not turn over. When pulling it and trying to change gears it would grind the gears.
I"m looking for any suggestions or what might be wrong with it. Thanks in advance.

Pull starting can both be good or bad. It becomes bad when the tires slide in high gears. You can very well end up with at he least bent pushrods and if the tires can get a good grip bend a rod.

When you know that something could be in the cylinders never try to pull without pulling with all spark plugs removed to make sure all oil or water has been blown out thru the spark plug holes that could fill the firing chamber to block rotation and bend a rod.

When the tires slide you need to first pull the valve cover to check for stuck valves. One stuck valve can slide a tire. Then if the tire gets a good grip on something the push rod goes into a U.

#1 WD40 is worthless for that type of thing. Wick or blow it out of the cylinder and fill with ATF. WD40 is a water displacement stuff and that is about it. #2 it is not ever good to try to pull one to free it up things like to break when you do that. I when freeing up an engine set a 12 volt battery in and with the plugs out. Always put them back in when soaking with ATF to keep stuff out of the cylinders. Any way I use short fast taps on the starter to free them up. The starter will not produce enough torque to hurt any thing but the push rods. As for as shifting it when being pulled yep the gears in the transmission are spinning as it is moving so not shifting

Pull the head and pan, and use some penetrating oil, like Kroil, PB blaster, or acetone/atf. Tap on each piston, using a wooden block, under a no bounce hammer. Don't try anything real fast, sometimes slow is best. Also might have to jack up against the crank, to get it to start movin.

After checking the valves to be sure they are not froze up.Put some ATF/acetone in each cylinder let set for a while. With spark plugs out, jack up one rear wheel, put in 4th gear and rock the rear tire back and forth every day, but not too hard, it will eventually come loose and start to move, keep doing that eventually you will get one full revolution. If that does not do it remove the crank shaft and work on one piston at a time.
