1939 AC - need sleeves-where?

Sleeves and piston come as a kit for a reason. The sleeve wear and so do the pistons. nnalert lists them for the C and B etc. So now the question why do you need new sleeve or do you have some that are cracked??

Low psi. Owner says it doesn't smoke, but, 60psi is all I get. So, its $350 in sleeves/pistons. I'd have thought that one might be able to do just sleeves or just rings, or any combo. But, with comp. that low, it's gotta smoke. I've not seen it run. First thing I guess is to actually get it to fire and run. No spark. Once the rain quits, I'll dig into it. Just need it to mow 6 times a summer, that's it. $1000. Good tin and paint and rubber.

If you are checking compression by hand cranking it will be low. Don't rush to fix it till you get it going and see if it burns oil.

Get it running with the compression the way it is and work the snot out of it for a few hours and if it doesn't look mosquito smoker you will find the compression has came up.

Low compression can be caused by valves not sealing as tight as they should with brandy new pistons/sleeve engine kit installed.

Was not a rebuild, prior bought it 2 yrs ago and doesn't use it. No idea what internals look like. Current says no smoke, that's all I know and he said they ran it last summer, and did pull start it this spring. I couldn't get spark, but, maybe ground wasn't right.

Also wondering what mowers go on a C and what value is a C with a front plow, in nice condition, just needs a starter?

Well think about it. Can a person spin and engine over as fast as a starter can??? Compression is a factor of the speed at which an engine can be spun over and the fast it goes the higher the compression. So for what it is as for bad or good get it running then think about parts not buy part then get it running it may well be a good tractor that just needs a little TLC

don't speculate on what it's going to need until you have it running for a while. Once running put some Seafoam in the gas and oil. Once you run it for a while (hours)then check compression. If it is still low, squirt a quanity of oil in each cylinder and check compression again. If it is higher, you need rings, if it is the same you need a valve job. LOL Bob

I have a C that I had to free up since when I got it the engine was locked up and it still has the same sleeves and pistons etc in it that where in it when locked up. I did have to pull the sleeves out and replace the sleeve seals and put on a new pan and head gasket but it sill runs fine and it has the front lift which works for a snow plow or other such things that need to be lifted

Sounds like my free 1986 F250 with plow. Stuck. Poured oil and MMO in the cyls, let it sit 2 days, carefully prodded it to turn with a breaker bar and big socket on crank. Finally got it to turn and start. Doesn't even burn oil now, 88k miles, $1000 in parts and it's my wood/plow truck. Hilarious.

I have a 1965 GMC school bus that has a V-6 engine in it that I plan to do an ATF treatment to so I can maybe drive it from one end of my place to another end. By drive way it is about a mile so I figure if I can get it to run it would be easier then to try to pull it since it does not have working brakes so if I can drive it and just use 1st gear I could stop it if need be by shutting it off

IF you really need to do a "re-ring", engine repair, overhaul or
rebuild , after you get it running and find out what you really
have to deal with, there are a lot of choices. It is possible, if
the cylinder sleeves and ALUMINUM pistons are "not too bad"
(rings can be totally shot and stuck), to hone the sleeves,
knurl the pistons (to expand them to compensate for wear),
and install new rings and do a valve job. I know of one WC
that was done this way in 1978 and still runs good. I do not
know if your 1939 has aluminum pistons or not. Good luck in
your efforts.
