low oil pressure

I have a 1949 "C" that shows little to no oil pressure when running. It has the correct filter & new AC gauge. Should I put a heavier oil in it or stay with 30wt. Tractor runs good - smokes some but over all starts & runs good.

When first starting do you have any pressure then drops off as engine warms. I just rebuilt a WD-45 that had 4- 6 lbs. cold and nothing when warms up
New main and rod bearings and cleaned filter on oil pump. Now 30 weight oil and 12 at idle and 25 full throttle.
Book says 12 lbs. or more is normal.
This engine had loose bolt in head near where water hose went to the radiator and allowed water antifreeze to get in pan bearings were sad shape when replaced.

It barely comes off the line when cold & pretty much stays there. I dont have numbers on the gauge. Can I get to the oil pump filter by removing the oil pan ??Maybe it's sludged up restricting the flow .

New gauge may be bad or one not made for these old A/C tractor that have this low oil pressure. I would try another gauge then go from there. Many parts now days are made so poorly that they are not worth the $$ they cost and made in the land of almost right

Does AC make a hi & low pressure gauge. There is'nt any numbers on this AC gauge. Can I get to the oil pump screen by removing the oil pan ??

Most oil gauges I have seen on the A/C tractors say normal on them and have a area that if the needle is in that area is ok. As for getting to the pick up yep drop the pan. I have one old WD45 engine here that I ran with little to no oil pressure for years and it was still running when I pulled it out of my W Speed Patrol.

Pull the pan and check the screen. Also check the screen pipe, for tightness. Oil pump is right in front of flywheel, cam side, IIRR. Before you split the tractor, for an oil pump, make sure your filter is
right, chopped up cotton is the media, not paper. one filter mfg had lots of problems, can't remember which.

When I overhauled my first WD45, It had no oil pressure. My shop was only 2 blocks from the AC dealer in Indianola Iowa. They had me bring it over. They pulled out the oil pressure,I Think, bypass spring and stretched it out. It is behind a plug on the side of the block. That made the oil pressure gauge read in the normal range. hope this helps.

The pleated paper, full flow type oil filter, with a rubber baffle put in it, pretending to be a filter for these old engines, was the culprit. It offered no resistance. I know Wix/NAPA had one. I don't know if anyone else did. Some engineer really messed up on that one.
