Allic Chalmers C cracked block

My SIL has a AC Model C. He hasn't torn into it yet, but there is a crack in the block- coolant is getting into the oil. Before he tears it down, any suggestions? is there a common failure? The radiator was bad last fall, he neglected to drain the block, and had been adding just water toward the end of summer. He assumed since the radiator was drained everything was dry. Bad assumption, I know

You could pull the valve cover off and check the core plugs under the rocker arms. They get soft and leak down through the block into the oil pan. Check them using an awl and see if you can poke holes through the metal.
Any visable signs on the outside of the block?
LOL Bob

I would do 2 things. Pull the valve cover and the oil pan and fill it with water. Of course make sure it does not get cold enough to freeze it again. Maybe a simple sleeve o-ring or a freeze plug

I have never seen one crack internally from freezing. The crack would be on the outside. I would sooner think you have a core plug leaking under the rocker arms as stated below. That is a common problem without using just water.

WITH USING JUST WATER By the way not without.
I was thinking without anit rust in the water like in anti freeze.

Thanks for the encouraging responses. My SIL is going to work on it Sunday, and you guys have given him some great things to look for. I will let you know what Ge finds and if he has more questions

Again, thanks for the help all. SIL pulled the valve cover, and yup, one of the core plugs was out! it was in good shape so he reinstalled it, and it is holding water.
