175 d engine

I have an early 175 with a perkins deisel. I think it is a 248 cid. It runs but needs a rebuild. I was wondering if anyone has ever put a perkins from another tractor, ie Massey Ferguson, in an allis? Or some other application? I am not ready to rebuild the engine and would like to find a running engine to install while I tear into its original one. Also are running 248's readily available at salvage yards? It just has to run for a little while. I understand you get what you pay for and buyer be ware. Thanks

I've never done it, but by the parts book, it looks to me a that 236 or a 248 would fit. The 236 will be easier to find, I think. They only show one flywheel and one engine adapter plate with either engine. I don't remember exactly how the front of the engine bolts to the frame but I can't imagine how the 236 would be any different from the 248

Thanks Harry. I will be on the look out for either one. Why would you think the 236 would be easier to locate? Where more produced or where more of this size used in other tractors? Thanks again.

The 236 was commonly used as an industrial powerplant for pumps, generators, etc. Hesston put them in swathers for years, and I've seen them in other machines as well. The 248's I see are mainly in tractors.
