ring gear on Allis B

just put a new ring gear on my Allis B and it slips on the fly wheel. could I spot weld it a couple of places through the starter hole? Any Ideas for a quick fix or should I assume the ring gear is bad and replace.

Sounds like you got a bad or wrong ring gear or installed it wrong. Yes you might be able to weld it like your saying but hard to say how long that might last

You need to return it and get one that is correct. You have to have the correct diameter and tooth count to work with your starter drive gear.

The one I bought was suppose to be the correct one. This ring gear went on snug. But I did not have to heat. the old ring gear to remove and did not have to heat this one to put on. It was put into a press and equal pressure on surface of ring gear. I have thought of pulling it back off and use a puncture wound punch on the fly wheel, or weld as I have stated earlier If I weld would a 7018 rod be best or a 6010 rod. And what are your thoughts on heat. I would hate to end up with a warped fly wheel and breaking the crank shaft.

Not having to heat it to me says it was the wrong one even if they said it was right. My have been miss market as to what it fit

Do a tooth count and lay the old one over the new and make sure they are the same. a coupla small spots of any welding rod will cause it to stay in place. (Something is out of spec.) If it is not the ring gear then it would be the flywheel. I would be measuring both with calipers to see what was going on.

I"d use a small chisel or good punch and stake it through the starter hole in a half dozen places.Don"t think that I would try welding. Kip

Well I will let you know if the weld holds. I used a 7018 rod and put two 1 inch welds opposite of each other on fly wheel. I did take a tooth count and a side by side measurement before installation. It works for now but I will let you know after 1000 starts. But I kind of believe it might be the flywheel. I have replaced a-lot of ring gears but only on Minneapolis Moline and they always took heat to remove and put on.

I wasn't thinking an inch of weld. If they are not exactly opposite and the same amount it could cause it to vibrate. Flywheels are balanced at the factory when manufactured.

Tramway; you are probably correct. I often wondered if the problem started with the installation of the 12v battery. And if at installation of ring gear if I was to let the flywheel sit out and get a little rust on it or to puncture wound punch the surface. It does work now with the weld but I will always wonder when it will fail.

Weld probably won"t hurt a thing till the out of balance condition tears up the rear main and the seal lets go :(
