Increased Tire size

Hi all , can I install a taller and wider tire on my WC and not increase it's weight too much, like maybe the wheels from my wd45. Right now I'm using the original 11x28 and need more traction .

Thanks

WD45 wheels won't bolt up without a 6-8 adapter. You should be able to run 13.6x28 maybe 14.9x28, but they'd have some pretty good roll getting them on an 11" rim and might not clear the fenders. I have 14.9x24 on my unstyled, but the tire rub the fender on the spoke rims I have when set narrow, so I'm pretty wide for now. I need to build some spacers to get it narrowed up.

Using old size markings, you can go an inch wider than rim width. ie, a 12 inch (13.6) tire, without looking or acting funny.

JMS is right. I have seen a LOT of "restored" WC's sitting on 14.9x 24 or 28" rubber. 13.6 is near impossible to find and afford, so they jump to the 14.9. If you don't mind used, some newer front assist tractors and rear steers on combines are 13.6 or 14.9 but would need mounted on your 6 bolt rims. If you are asking about pulling , then that's a completely different issue.

Sorry forgot to give the year of my WC . It's a 1939 styled. So an unstyled tire is bigger and better . I'll have to keep my eyes open for some .

Thanks

Unstyled WC was 11x24 styled was 11x28. Same rim width, but the styled rim was 4" taller. I know for fact that 14.9 doesn't look "right" on a stock rim, but is a LOT cheaper than a 13.6 which would be closer.

Here is what the Allis supllied as standard equipment: unstyled WC 11.25x24

My Goodyear chart dated from 1962 converts that size to the modern size of 14.9x24 sqeezed onto a pretty narrow rim to give it a high profile. It's the same tire as the 11.25x24 measured at a different place. My brother has a 1934 WC with 14.9x24 tires and it does look right to me IMHO. The later styled WC ran either a 12.4x28 or 11.2x28 which are modern measurements of much narrower tires than the unstyled WC but taller.

It seams that a lot of people get things mixed up thinking a 11 and a 11.25 tire are the same not realizing the difference in the way of measuring. Now converting them up to the new sizing the 11 becomes a 12.4 while the 11.25 becomes the 14.9 and the 11.25 was orignally used on a rim perhaps only 2/3 as wide as the tire from the factory and they think because the new way of doing things is the sidewall should be straight but that is not the way these old tractors were designed. That 11.25 size was measured by the cross section HEIGHT of the tire while the new 14.9 will be measured on the cross section WIDTH of the tire on a rim with the sidewalls straight and as they do not know anybetter because they are too young to have ever seen the orignal tires they do not think things look right because they do not know what the orignal looked like. Me I do remember those old size tires and unless the beads are pulled in they do not look right.

They did not make an 11 tire when the unstyled tractor was made, it was the 11.25 tire and should be the same height as the 11-12.4 on the styled tractors.

There also seems to be confusion on the 13 tire with people thinking the 13.6 is the same size but it is not, the 13 became the 14.9. The 13.6 derived from the 12 tire that evolved from the 10.00 tire. the 11 tire evolved from the 9.00 tire and later became the 12.4. the 13.50 became the 15 and I do not know off hand what that evolved to but possibly the 16.? or the 18.? as the 16.? probably came from the 14 with no XX.XX equivilant.
