I like to start freeing an engine by removing the valve cover and tapping each valve to see if they are free. You could have a stuck vale and that's why its tries to run and will not . White smoke is associated with water or antifreeze in my experience. We cranked a Cat skidder to death and it puffed white smoke after pulling the head off , we discovered cracks under the valves.

Well, it could be several things. On my old (WD) that had not been run in 10 years... I serviced the air breather, cleaned the carburator, changed pluggs, plugg wires, flushed fuel tank and lines, replaced the points in the magnito, and at this time I changed it to 12 volt (neg.) ground...also rebuilt the starter motor, and installed a new muffler, changed engine oil and filter, transmission and final drive gear oil, installed aa new battery and cables. White smoke tells me that you'r not getting a spark at the correct time, (if at all).

So you say you got it fired up but then you say you do not which is it?? If it sat that long did you do any thing to free up sticking rings and clean up the rust that would have been on the cylinder walls?? If you do not you may have broken rings etc. How do you know it is plug wires or timing?? You may have a simple low compression problem due to sticking rings so fill in the gaps as to what you have done or not done. Hard to help you help your self with out good info. Whats the spark look like what is the compression etc
