New Allis B owner-soon

I am likely going to buy a nice B in a month or so when the snow clears in MI...saw it on Craigs, and told him I'd buy it as long as it had a good motor. Nice paint, clean, good tires.

Comes with a belly sickle bar which I want for mowing. Question-how well do those work. I've been wondering if I should look for a belly mower...but, trying to keep the cost down as I'll really only use this to mow and pull a cultipacker once in a while to help when I seed food plots. I overseed and then just roll.

Have an 8N but, it's more than I need, really, despite loving it.

For hay and cutting grass along side a drive way they are real good. Now if you want to mow your lawn well heck no there not good. By the way if you want a manual for that mower just send me an e-mail asking for it since I have it in the computer

I am going to use it for field areas, food plots, not yard grass...never < 4" of height...

Old-how to email you?

The ford is probably more versatile if you are going to be switching implements regularly (the 3pt is an added benefit). The Ford is also easier to get off and on. The B would make a good dedicated machine (like mowing).

Right. And I don't need a $2800 Ford when all I really need is a mower. Plus the B is kinda cool. I'll be selling my 3pt disk and mower, and pocketing the difference...

How does a B connect power for a sickle bar mower or a belly mower?

The drive for the mower is belt by way of a pulley on the PTO shaft. The ford you have is more user friendly by the way a B can be a real pain to get on and off of. The B is also a tad bit smaller in HP then your ford. Me I would keep both but that is me and I have way to many tractors as it is.
As for e-mail if your on modern you should be able to click on my name and that will send you to the e-mail form. If on classic and you open your post at the top in the bottom of all my answer there should be a send E-mail of you can if you want to do it the hard way

I'm aware of the diffs. I don't need the extra cost and HP of the 8N, despite my love of it...I just need a mower, really.

The sickle mower on a B works well, usually they are 5 ft. long however some longer ones do exist. It is good for tall grass/weeds. I made hay with one for some years

Some people put a Woods L59 mower on B"s and use as a lawn mower. It won"t work on tall grass.

I don't let anything get > 6" or so, give or take, before I mow it, so, we're not talking about taking out full fields of mature tall grass. More maintenance mowing on existing alfalfa, clover food plots, and some open areas that I keep lower...

The Woods would be great, but they're pricey.

Hoping this all goes well...Sounds like fun.

By the way my partner uses my belly mount sickle mower on his A/C C and he uses it to mow all his hay. Does a pretty good job of it to. I use a sickle bar mower or did last year to mow my hay with is on my Farmall BA which is a hybrid tractor being half B and half A

We used a 6' center mount sickle bar mower on our B for years. Dad bought it new with the tractor in 1948. From my viewpoint it was a love-hate relationship. The mower needed constant repairs, always something broken or loose. Maybe we just got one made on Monday morning or Friday night? It was a bear to put on and take off under good conditions, and if you knocked it off the blocks it sat on it was a mad mother bear with twin cubs, if you get my drift. Once it was on the tractor it was dream to use. Everything right in front of you, no turning around to see what you are doing. Very easy to make clean square corners without plugging. I still have both, but I'm not putting that mower back on the tractor for a long time.

The reason you had to fix them all the time was they shake them self's apart. If you have dentures you best leave them in the bath room or you would be looking for them in a hay bale.

Our first tractor on the farm was a B Allis.
What a fright, it took about all day to change from
the plow to the culivators.
When dad traded it on a new 40s John Deere it was
like going from a model T to a Cadillac

Many people now days run the cycle mowers at to many RPM"s. As a kid starting to mow Dad would not want us to run a tractor over half throttle when mowing.
If you happen to ride a horse drawn ground drive mower and take note of how fast the cutter bar is running you will see that half throttle on a tractor is faster.

Yep but then how many people do most stuff on tractor way to fast. I have seen many a person rake hay in the highest gear the tractor has and then wonder why they have to replace teeth all the time. LOL

Assuming I do in fact buy the B, I'll first make sure all the teeth are very sharp, and then take it slow to get a feel for how it works...

New sections for that are very common and a box of 10 will cost you around $10 or less. I switch the one I have over to bolts instead of rivets so as to make it quick and easy to change a broken one in the filed. The manual also shows you the neat thing like how to go around a square corner etc

Yep or the guy who brush hogs in 3rd gear or higher and wonders why he keep shearing shear pins or not cutting things as good as he wants them cut
