Are you keeping the 6 volt Positive ground system? If so, then the ignition wire goes to the - side of the coil and the wire from the + side of the coil goes to the distributor. The pin on the back of the ammeter behind the + sign of the meter is the positive pin so I guess you're "right", that would be the right pin looking at the back of the meter.

The two things you stated probably have nothing to do with the problem. The engine will run with the coil hooked up backwards but will run better when hooked up right in relation to the ground. + ground--- power to - and dist to + - ground--- power to + and dist to -
If the ammeter is hooked up backwards it will just read wrong. When charging it will read dischaging.

Yes your reply was right. He made another post after the one you replied to and I didn"t want him thinking that if he had the wires wrong on either the coil or the ammeter it would be causing the smoking problem. Sorry, I worded my reply wrong. I should have said that these questions you are asking won"t have anything to do with the smoking problem.
