What are some good and bad points about a D 17? Any opinions? I'm looking for another tractor to use on our truck patch, food plots, and mowing. Don't have to have a loader, but would be nice. Anything to look out for with one of them? I really think it's a good looking tractor, in the price range I'd like to spend. Thanks in advance. Mark

Check the make sure it does not jump out of any of the gears. Also check that the power divider works as it should. Then pretty much from there all the same things as you would with any tractor

Like old said make sure it dosent jump out of any gear and the power director works right. I just traded my D17 Hi-Clearance off for a no-till drill and it wound have been perfect for a truck farm. If you could find one like it it would be a good fit for you. Series 4 is the best of the 4 series they made. If you could find a series 4 with factory PS and 3pt gas I think you would be very happy with it. Happy hunting. Bandit

the only thing I can say is if you find one, and want to put a front loader (bucket style) on it, get one with the wide front! Do not get a tricycle type. The D17 that my dad was killed on had a Bush Hog 2632 (number correct?) QT on it, and although not 100% positive, I am sure this bucket made the tractor unstable even on level ground for rollover, which is what happened to him. I am in the process of tearing down the tractor, and parting it out with exception for the engine. Am also selling the Bush Hog front loader separately. Good luck in your search, and stay away from tricycle-style D-17s!

To check out the Power Director (hand clutch on right side)- put it in low gear, go fwd and reverse, both high range and low range, while standing on the brake. It should keep moving, with no issues. If not, the clutch plates are worn and you need to split the tractor to replace them. Spendy repair. Snap over center should be distinct, but that might just be an adjustment/shim issue- fixed without splitting. Get the service manual before trying that adjustment- I&T AC 17.

Most tractor rollovers with loader on them is the resulate of operator error, turning to fast on corners, having the bucket up in the air too high, either loaded or empty. a wide front end tractor will roll over the same as a narrow front.

I agree and have found most tractor with loaders on end up laying over on there sides if the person is a wannabe farmer type. Have a friend who got a loader tractor and he had it less then a week and had it layed over on its side due to running it with the loader up in the air wit ha load in the bucket on a small hill side. He told me about it and I said YOU never run a loader any higher then needed to get from point A to point B and then you lift it up only as high as needed to dump the bucket load

Michael V where are you located? I am in Glorieta.
Anyway it is on the Lubbock Craigslist, Type in Tractor when the list comes up go down to FEB 14th and look for tractor and implements (Hobbs) that"s it. I just looked it up before I answered. Good Luck.
