bad spot on flywheel

I have a WD-45 and a D-14 and on both especially the 45, I have to rotate the engine from where it sits to get the starter to engage. I know this means the flywheel has a bad spot but how do I fix them? Do I need to split the tractors? The 14 only does it once in a while but the 45 does it every time. It's a pain and depending on what is involved I'ld love to fix them. Thanks
Eric

doubtful those starters interchange, sometimes starters mate themselves to the problem , I have 2 DC Case's ,, had a similar ring gear problem , so i swapped starters ,, and it improved quite a bit..

You have to split the tractors and remove the flywheel. Marh the flywheel and the ring gear and rotate the ring gear 180 degrees or reverse the ring rear which require tapering the teath so the starter will engage. The ring gear will come off of the flywheel with some heat applied. To reinstall, I put the gear in the oven for about 20 minutes, and the flywheel in the freezer. LOL Bob

Flywheel ring gear is bad on both. Engines almost always stop in the same spot when you turn them off so that one area of the ring gear gets hammered over and over again. The correct fix is to replace the ring gear. Ye some times you can pop the ring gear of and flip it etc but if your going to do all that work why not buy a new one and have it last another 50 years or so. Yes you have to split the D series but the WD45 you can pull the engine with out doing a full split

You will need a new starter bendix drive as well. A bad drive gear, bushing or spring that is not changed at the first stripping sound is what normally causes the bad ring gear.

Like the red oil light coming on in your car. When the light comes on damage is being done then.

Ya not a nice thing but if you can move the crank by a 1/10 of a turn before you try to start them they will work fine for years

Hey I'll try that thanks. The 14 just started doing it and only does it once in a while, but the 45 does it every time, and even kicks out when the spot comes around so if it doesn't start and it doesn't always, you have to start all over. Ugg

Concerning your D14, be carefull as there are two different flywheel ring gears. One has 116 teeth and the other has 93 teeth. One starter drive has 9 teeth and the other has 10 teeth. The 9 meshes with the 93 and the 10 meshes with the 116. I'm stating these teeth numbers from memory and may not be accurate but I think they are.
