Larry Hardesty 01-06-2013 11:34:00 74.38.128.240 Report to Moderator	This is the continuing saga of my 1942 Allis Chalmers C. I have the back wheels off, and it looks like while I do I should replace rear axle oil seals since there is quite a bit of oil leaked onto the rear wheels. I do have the service manual and parts manual, but after 70 years, some things do not come apart like the manual says they will. Is there any trick I should know about taking off the flanged rear axle and replacing the oil seals? Looks like there is a spacer seal (part 295510) and an oil seal (part 206459). Where can I purchase them? And, anything else I should look for or check on while I have the flanged rear axle off? Thanks in advance. Larry [Reply]   [No Email]
Ralphwd45 01-06-2013 14:01:56 66.243.215.13 Report to Moderator	Re: Allis Chalmers C Rear Axle Oil Seal in reply to Larry Hardesty, 01-06-2013 11:34:00   This is a real good time to replace the seals around the shafts where they enter the hydraulic fluid housing. they will leak oil into the brake area and run thru the axle housing, onto the ground. Will I have to take off the final drive housing? It looks like a heavy piece. If I have to remove it, any idea of its weight? The cover in the inside of the bull gear housing must be removed, then the bolt with shims is removed, then the axle is either driven or pushed out. Then the outer bearing is removed and the oil seal is put on the axle and the process is reversed. I forgot inside the bull gear housing is a big nut the holds the bull gear on the axle that must be removed, I use big channel lock pliers on that. [Reply]  [No Email]

And not the shaft assembly coming out of the transmission. I suppose per Ralph, I should replace the seals on it too but looks like a lot more effort. I have the pictures from the parts book but I don't see the big nut holding the bull gear on the housing. Thanks for the heads up on it. Larry [Reply]  [No Email]
