D14 HAND CLUTCH?

Hello,Got a question for AC GUYS.On my d14 the hand clutch pulls good in both sides,but it doesnt snap over as tight as it had ought to,AND WILL at times not stay latched on the hi side,unless you clutch it,snap it into hi and take off from there.It pulls fine though,and tries to pull even in neutral position.How do you adjust it?Thanks for any helpful replies.

First- get yourself a reprint of the original AC service manual so you have the info. right there.
I'll hit some high points.
Access is through the side cover there by the handle. There are 9 shim stacks total, three lined up, in each of three places around the perimeter of the clutch. The total thickness of each set of three needs to always be the same. To tighten a clutch, you take a few shims out of one side, and put the same amount back in the middle. However the shims in the middle(between the two plates dividing the halves of the clutch) are longer. A good old AC dealer will have a drawer full somewhere. Maybe you'll have to buy new. It's a trial and error kind of thing, and sounds a lot more complicated than it really is. Do one side, then the other. If by moving shims you can't get it to snap and stay, then something is worn to the point of needing to be replaced.
 
There are some washers and a bolt, that limit the forward travel, IIRR. You remove a washer, and put it on the other side of the plate. While you are down there, looking at it, check the set screw, at the bottom of the lever, for signs of looseness, or foreign matter caught between the plate with the notches, and the lever index point.
 
Now you see why you need a service manual! While I was trying to peck out instructions on clutch adjustment, Dave was thinking of the exterior adjustments, which I totally dismissed. You can certainly try that first.

Very common for them to pull some in neutral at least in the lower gears like 1 and 2nd and reverse. You need the I-T manual AC-201 to explain the adjustments on that power director as A/C calls it. That is one manual I should get for my self since I have a D-17 but one of them round to it things
 
As per the back cover of the AC-11 the I-T 201 covers the D14-to the 175 and all between. It does not even have a AC-17 listed and the back cover of the AC-202 does not list an I-T AC-17 either
 
I wonder if they don't print the AC-17 anymore. Mine is maybe 30 years old. Probably bought it about '83/84 when I got my second D17.
 
Could well be that the AC-17 is no longer available and was replaced by the A-C 201 which list the D-14, D-15, D-17, D-10, D-12, 160 170 and the 175 all series of all of them. May well be like the AC202 I have which is about a 1/2 inch thick and covers from the D-21 up to the 7080 and all between which I'll not list because it is a long list as in 16 models and ALL series in them
 
I know what you mean.I use it regularly and with 4 kids,a wife who works nights,cows and having other tractors to keep going and 2 trucks and a car,and looking after my Mom.The manual,or absence of it at this time makes friends on here even more necessary.Ive given my knowledge and experiences more than once on forums here for more than 10 years without angry remarks,and I dont know why some folks find it necessary to try belittling somebody.I know its called a power director,but many also call it a hand clutch.See how far you travel with it in neutral!Thanks for all the HELP Fellas!
 
Yep know where your coming form on help and being helps and it is sad that some have to be butts and answer you or others in ways that help no one but in stead hurts. Shoot if I remember you may have been one of the many that has stopped in to my place before
 
Or get your shop manual, from Agco, direct, from your dealer, or Sandy Lake Equipment. Agco original manual costs less, and has no paragraphs starting with But first, if you know what I mean!

Its a great hobby to some folks,and to a whole lot of us great satisfaction still farming with older machines and getting by without payments on a giant new pile of plastic,and some of the friends Ya make are great too.
 
Ya the newest tractor I have on the place is about the same age as that D-14 you have and is a D-17. The oldest is a 1935 JD-B on steel
 
Ive got a 1086 which is a 1978,and oldest right now is a 1949 VAC Case,but I also have a 1953 Super C,and 54 Super Mta(trying to put together from lost parts),1956 400 farmall,and 1973 wheel horse pulling tractor.I have owned as old as 1939 before.I like red and green mainly,but you know that little d14 starts parked in an iceberg.
 
I have 2 VAC parts tractors here both 1946. I also have a VAI that has a loader on it. Plus many many other tractors. Have 1 of most of the common brands and some I have 3 or 4 of that brand. As for AC I have that D-17 a WD45, A 1946 C with 2 parts Cs the same year. A parts WD and my W Speed Patrol and those are just the orange ones
 
Ive had more in the past,but I decided a few years ago to only keep the ones I really desired,(cheaper on batteries)My 1st tractor ride was a VAC.Ist I plowed with was an 1800 Ollie Gasser,but my favorite open station was my Dads 4010 Diesel,and that tractor is next on my goals list of "keepin tractors"after I get the MTA DONE, and a the 400 gets its alternator conversion,AND BRAKES,The Super C gets its new starter bendix,and axle seals,and a new battery for the VAC.
 
Shoot around here I play musical batteries. I have more tractors than batteries so I move them around as needed
 
What another tractor or 5 more batteries?? I need probably 3 0r 4 batteries and that is if I am lucky
 
Well I have 4 or 5 tractor I would be happy to let go of. Seems I have to many on the place so a number of them just seem to sit and do nothing most of the time
 
Our VAC sets the most,but I cultivated 6 acres of corn this Summer with it to seal over the cracks,never saw rain and had to chop it anyway.The Super C drilled all my wheat this Fall with a Deere FB Drill and digs post holes too.My 400 usually sees cyclo air planter,raking,square baling,used to have a loader on it.The 1086 now is my loader tractor,disc,field cultivator,Round Baler.I bought the d14,it wouldnt start.We got it woke up,and Ive enjoyed it so far,but we may let it go to an AC loving home to complete the M-ta in time for hay season.To tell the truth though,the 14 is my personal pick of all the AC TRACTORS I have had thus far.I have a friend aching to trade me an A Farmall for something cattle related.That'd give a nice lil IH line-up I think.The A,Super C,Super Mta,400,and 1086.Seems there should be a 560 or 706 in there too? My future 4010 diesel is gonna look awful weird in there,aint it?Makes me smile inside just thinkin bout it.LOL!
