coolant in oil, 1949 A-C C

On my 1949 A-C "C", I discovered an empty radiator and the crank case full of oil/coolant mixture resembling a grey liquid mud. Any recommended procedures to clean oil passages before I replace oil and filter and add some "Bar's" stop-leak to radiator. Does this symptom possibly indicate a bad head gasket or something worse such as a cracked block?

If it were me I would find where the leak is with plain old water before I put in any stop leak. If one of the core plugs under the rocker arms has a pin hole in it the stop leak will not stop the leak normally and does not usually work if a sleeve O ring has blown thru or at least not for very long.

Find the problem first or your going to be throwing good $$ at bad. As Dick said could be a simple freeze plug under the valve cover or could be one of the sleeve seals but either way stop leak is the last thing to try till you know for sure where the problem is. Pull the valve cover with the radiator full of water and watch the freeze plugs, do not leave the water in very long if you have freezing temps.

take off the hood and valve cover. Look at the three freeze plugs under the rocker arm. If one has a hole or rusty, replace it. TAke out the oil pan drain plug. Fill the radiator with water and watch. If you have a slow leak into the oil pan, that is probably the o-ring around the liners. You can add 1/2 bottle for BARS Copper Block and manifold sealer and it will seal that up. Get at Auto Zone for about 410. It will mix with the antifreeze..... Leave the oil pan plug out for an hour and let everything drip out that can.. THen install plug, new oil, antifreeze and BARS and startup and run 20 minutes to seal. You dont need to flush the oil system. Change the oil filter after all is done and the system is working right.

Leaks at the sleeve "O-Rings" can be repaired without tearing the engine down too, if you will Clean the water jacket out well..scrub it clean with a wire and brushes, Dry, then pour in enough Non-Hardening Permatex to completely surround each sleeve and the web between them at the water jacket bottom..

FWIW.

My first C with the first engine that I used as my puller had a small leak from a sleeve O ring. I was only using the tractor on week ends to pull. Every three weekends I drained the yellow oil out and added a can of stop leak. Several different ones. I don't remember how many but it was all summer long. Never did stop leaking enough to stop the oil from turning yellow. I never pulled the sleeves out but when I built another engine I set it on back of my shop floor where it still lays.

After you get the sleeves out to clean it with a wire brush you might as well put in new O rings. :)^D

I had a similar problem with my Oliver 60. Before I overhauled it I put liquid glass in the cooling system to seal it up. When I pulled the sleeves, the sleeve o rings crumbled. I was surprised at the amount of crud that was in the cooling system...
