Allis Chalmers B Electric start conversion.

I would imagine this has been asked a million times, but here goes. I have found a very nice AC model B. I does not have electric start. Or for that, not even an electrical lighting system. What all is involved to adding a starter. I see that the torque tubes are different. How hard to find and how expensive to add. The electrical system itself is no real biggie to wire. But I"m going to need either a generator or alternator and bracket. I"m sure a different flywheel will be in order too. The tractor had a cosmetic restoration several years ago. The tires are almost new. It starts easy enough. A couple of 2 or 3 cranks is all it takes. I can probably buy it for $600.00. But I don"t care for a hand crank engine. Thanks.

Does the engine block have the tapped bosses for the generator mount? Seems that I recall seeing some early Bs and/or Cs that did not have those bolt holes. And does it have hand brakes?

I have all of the parts you would need except for a starter. All can be mailed except the torque tube, which is too heavy. I am in northern NY state. Send me an email if you are interested in parts.

I do not know about the bolt holes. The tractor has foot operated brakes. I wrote the serial number down when I went to look at it. Can't seem to locate it now. Which side of the engine would the generator mount?

A lot depends on where you are. The torque tube is heavy as in the flywheel so shipping could be a big problem. I also have most if not all you need on hand but I am in Missouri

Thanks. I haven't bought it yet. Trying to figure out if the tractor's worth the trouble. I'm a Farmall and Deere man. But I've always liked the power the older AC's had.

The alt/gen mounts on the same side as the clutch peddle. The one I have does not have the bolt holes in the block for the gen. Someone converted this to electric start and mounted a generator under the seat. It runs off the pto shaft.

you are prob going to need engine block, yours prob does not have holes for generator mount. If you haven"t bought it pass on it till you find a electric start one. Somebody else would prob like a nice origional hand start B that hasn"t been peiced together.

generator mounts to the left side, pulley in line with the fan belt. I have center punched the hole locations by comparing to another block, then drill and tap right thru the block. I loctite a stud in the two holes, and mount the generator bracket to it... no problem. YOu need a longer fan belt.

as long as your at it, mount an alternator and 12 volt system.

What if you made a started that mounted on the PTO?. Engage the PTO with it out of gear to start. Push the clutch in and disengage the PTO to disconnect it and off you go.

My B is hand start and as long as it has fuel it starts fairly easy even after sitting a year.

It looks like I waited too long. I think she has it sold. Probably for the best. It is a very nice tractor. I just don"t care for a hand start. Thanks for all the info guys.

I have a C I would sell LOL. Has a front lift on it and a home made 3 point and the tires are good. One of a number of tractors I do not really need

Thanks. I'm kind of set for larger tractors. I've got a Farmall A. I just really liked this B for the money. She ended up letting it go for $500.00!

The A/C B and C and CA used the exact same engine in all 3 so for the most part that same size machines. I also have a Farmall BA which I build from 3 junk tractors. From the transmission forward it is a B and from the transmission back it is an A

the photo is a B that has the rear axle rotated 90 degrees and a straight front axle manufactured from stock. It has the B torque tube which is 6 inches longer than the IB, and it has B fenders. The IB had WD fenders. I made this 3-4 years ago and have a Bolten 6 ft belly mower deck on it now.

I would take your CA torque tube and make my usual deal to him on a B torque tube. Getting them moved from one locarion to the other is the problem. I am in North West Ohio next to and close to the Indiana Michigan lines.
