what causes bad wobble if WD narrow front?

I'm bringing the tractor in the barn to fix the bad wobble in the narrow front next weekend. My computer is down so I'm posting from my phone and can't check the archives easily. It wobbles slightly in 1st and 2nd and a lot once the tractor is in 3rd and its so bad in road gear that I'm afraid that I'll break something. Is this fix just replacing the bearings in the narrow front? Thanks in advance for your help.

Aaron is right on the money, check that set bolt , loosen the jam nut and make sure the square headed bolt is tight. gear play will cause the wobble also.

I also forgot about the bolt on the bottom that holds the spindle assembly to the vertical shaft. That could be loose as well. Big problem with the set screw is it's set against a square cut key in a keyway and if the key is wore, there is really no way to take the slop out of it other than keeping the setscrew tight.

Several causes- sloppy U-joint, worn pins, gears.....but don't ignore the big bearing on the bottom of the pedestal...They typically 'scallop' out- they don't turn much, but get hammered with constant pounding of the front wheels against the ground. Higher speeds, more wobbling. Pull that lower bearing, look for flat spots.

It seems to me the last one that I replaced, whe the bearing supply looked up the number on that bearing it is supposed to be rounded almost barrel shaped on the rollers in the bearing. caused they crossed that number to a regular tapered roller bearing.

I know the WD may be a bit different from the WC, but our WC had the exact same problem as you describe. We found the lower bearing to be very worn out in fact I've never seen a tapered roller bearing with that amount of flats on it. The wear caused there to be a lot of verticle play and excellerated the pounding it took.
We also replaced the wheel bearings and I tightened up the worm gear on its shaft due to that pin being worn. This took care of the wobble.

I fixed this very problem two years ago on a 49 WD. The spindle was loose on the verical shaft. I had to have the machine shop build up the shaft and recut the key way and make a new key. The bearings were both shot. The lower bearing was very expensive. Had to get it from Agco as it is a special bearing. I know it was at least $130 and that didn't include the race. I had a hard time getting the bearings shimmed correctly.

The wheel bearings feel apart and I had to replace them.

I also replaced the u joint. Don't get the u joint from agco. it is cheaper from one of the online parts outfits.I spent about $1200 on the front end.

been getting rain everytime im not working here in michigan. right now it"s parked in the garden and about ankle deep in mud until it dries up a bit. hopefully I can look at it before i get it in the barn. thanks again for the replies.
