Warning--pulling engine on WD45

I started pulling the engine on my WD45 today, so I can put a new clutch in. Am following the IT manual instructions, which leave a lot to be desired. It told me to remove a pin from the steering shaft u-joint, but didnt say that the distributer & coil would have to be removed to access the darned thing, or that the pin would have to have the riveted end ground off, before you can punch it out. Also that you cannot get a grinder in between the frame rail and engine, to grind it. I will replace it with a split roll pin, when it go'es back in. Tomarrow morning I am going to use the torch on the head of the pin, so it can be punched out. I guess Allis was afraid that the radiator and grill would fall off, being as they used 1/2" bolts, to hold the unit on with. I expected 3/8" or 5/16" bolts! To remove the coil, and distributer, I took a shortcut, and instead removed the govener, and dist as a unit, which I am sure will come back to bite me in the butt, upon reasembley. Just warning you folks that I have a good chance of being on this forum whining in a couple of days.

No need to take all that off. Never have just to get the engine out. If the pin was 'riveted'- it was pounded in....if you need to remove it, pound it out from the other side, underneath or whatever. No need to take right side engine components off. Radiator removal? there are holes in the lower 'C' frame you can stick a socket extension through, place the socket, and unscrew the bolts. Smaller bolts would just have broken off.

I have pulled a number of the WD WC and WD45 engines and all and never had much problems with the steering U-Joint and the pin. Just needed to get the u-joint turned in such a way as to be able to get a punch at it and drive it out the pin that is LOL

Ralph, when I pulled the engine from my WD45 I always remove the radiator then remove the bolts from the steering gear on the bolster and pull it out, just turn the steering wheel and it pushes it out. It is a lot easier than disconnecting the steering shaft at the u joint. I too will be pulling the engine in the spring to replace the clutch, should take less than a day.

It's a good thing, that I checked the forum, before I started on my tractor, maybe I can use you boys shortcuts.

Haven't done it myself, but this is what the guy up the road does.
Take off radiator & the LEFT frame rail. other rail will hold things together just sitting there. Wiggle the front of the motor to the side as you slide it forward, everything will clear the steering system. Goes back together the same way.

Ralph, if you need help let me know. Just out of curiosity do you live close to Tacoma? If so I can come over and help.

All you have to do to get the engine out is remove the radiator, take out the cotter key by the spring on the hand crank shaft, and remove the bolt that hold the bracket there. Shove that shaft forward into the steering housing. Remove the front engine support after the engine is on the hoist, then 4 bolts at the bell housing, plus the sheet metal flywheel cover. Gives you have plenty of room to remove the engine. Removing side rail, steering knuckle, anything else....simply not necessary.

Yes, I&T Manuals leave a little to be desired, and are sort of like Reader's Digest condensed books compared to factory manuals. They tend to be geared more toward professional mechanics with more general mechanical knowledge and experience vs. do-it-yourselfers.

Leonard! I didn't realize that there were other YTers that close! I knew that Mike(wa) was down by Chehalis, and have met him, and recieved help on my Oliver S55. A great guy! I would like to meet you, and swap lies, but my shop is open on one side, and unheated, I doubt you would work long in that atmosphere. Give me a call at 360 400 0250, I am just south of Roy on RT702. FT Lewis is my next door neighbor. i still apreciate the offer of help!

Ralph, I almost always work on my tractors out in the open. So working in the weather is no problem. Would truly enjoy swapping lies and working on tractors with you.

Old, when you drive the pin out, where are you driving from and to? Are you on the top driving downward? From the bottom up? Thanks...

If I remember right I did it from the top down and the pin would get to the point you reached up and pulled it out by hand but it has been 5 plus years since I did one, but I did start the WD45 I have and drove it around a little bit today

On a WD-45, you do not nttd to break the Steering connection......
Just u just un-bolt the steering Rod Hanger from thr Frame and let the steering rod go against the Frame...
Very simple..engine will just clear and come out..

All the wd I've been around have had a pin in one end of the joint and a bolt with lock nut on the other end. I know that's the why my 45 diesel is.
