Not hard at all. I grind them off with an angle grinder, find the center and drill thru. I make my own pawl with 3/8 inch for a press fit and don't weld it in. Once it gets put back together it has no way of getting out even if it might be a tad loose with a slip fit.I do not know what the pin diameter of the ones you get at John Deere. I see over the years that most think it needs welded in. To each his own.

Thanks Dick - I hope this is my problem. How long do you think it will take to tear down & put back after I change the pawl ?

Thanks Dick- If the pawl isn't flat on both sides where would I look for another problem ? The tie rods have some play but it doesn't seem to be excessive. I called the JD place today but they wern't sure what I was needing. They had heard of a pawl but wasn't sure of what it was . I told them I would bring a pic of it - maybe they can figure it out !!

I swapped one out for a fellow at his place one time in a forenoon. I think it was about three hours. I had all my tools that I would need on the truck. Not my first dance though.
I also swapped out his tie rod in that time.

That is what some have called it. It has other names with different people. Pawl is what I call them. They tell me you can buy the pawl at the John Deere parts counter. You have to drill out the old one.
