D17 intake/exhaust manifold on Gleaner

I"m about to replace some burned out gaskets on a gleaner combine with the D17 engine. What I am concerned about is the condition of the exhaust manifold sealing surface. If they have to be resurfaced, do they get milled the same level as the intake sealing surface? I recall that on some engines there is sometimes a difference in height.
 
Yes, they will mill all the ports down to the same level. That is the reason for having the manifold milled. The exhaust ports like to erode and/or warp from the heat. If the difference in clearances from high to low ports is approximately 1/8" or less you can probably get away without milling the manifold, all these manifolds seem to warp alittle. If it is noticably more than an 1/8" you will either break the manifold or have leaking gaskets by installing it without milling it first.
 
Had an E3 with a warped manifold like you are talking about. Took it to the local machine shop where they milled it back to straight and it ran for years with no more problems. Don't remember the cost but it was a lot less than a new manifold. Joe
 
It's best to resurface both the head and the manifold. Then you have a good surface on both sides of the gasket. My two cylinders seem particulary bad about burning away exhaust port surfaces. I always have both the head and manifold resurfaced, and no more problems. Some of them have been done 30 years ago, and are tractors that I use all the time.
