Going to try to rebuild a carb on my MIL wd45. have the old one in pieces (taken apart by one son 8 years ago) the rebuild kit is here for it. It is a Marvel Schebler TSX. Any one got any tips?? Also I beleive it is a 6V system also. The battery is no where to be found and my question is will it run with out one if I am trying to pull start it? I will put fresh gas in it (provided I am succesful at the carb rebuild. I do have the instruction sheet fron Zenith Fuel Systems, so that should help.

Any comments would be appreciated.

Not likely to ruin with out a battery since it stands about a 99% chance it has a battery ignition. Just for starting it and doing the get it running stuff you can use a 12 volt battery + ground and not hurt a thing as long as you do not run it for hours at a time or leave the ignition turned on

Wouldn't he need a 12v coil? I'm far from an expert on ignition systems, but since a WD45 was originally 6v + ground and had a dist, you would need to know what battery was in it last to know what it'd need now.

Butch, make sure that you clean all the orifices in the carb. Also make sure that the tank and fuel line is clean.

With the electrical, my WD45 is converted to 12v system and I have a ballast resister inline from the battery to the coil, still use the 6v coil. It is a very simple proceedure to change the system over. if you search here on this site you will come up with diagrams on how to do it. BTW you will not be diaspointed if you choose to convert to 12v. Much easier to start and you have common batteries through out your fleet of equipment.

You can use a 12 volt battery to get one up and running then us a 6 volt battery there after. Done many of them that way and if you run them for say 30 minutes or so you will not hurt much of any thing. Ya the points would not last as long but just for getting it running 12 volts is ok then go back to the 6 volt after you know it runs ok

Well guys I had gotten stumped by the carb so I am taking it to a friend who has a little more experience with them. As far as the 12V battery , I was able to hook one up and she cranked over so now I just need a fuel supply. Thanks for your help.

Butch, does your WD45 have distributor or magneto? If magneto, it won't matter whether you have a battery hooked up. The WD45 would have a Fairbanks Morse magneto, if it is magneto. If you have a magneto, and are considering a 12 volt conversion, you may wish to only convert the starting circuit, charging circuit and acs. circuits (lights etc). You don't have to change anything in the ignition circuit if you have a magneto and like it that way.
