I am going to check the oil in my gear box tomorrow, and wondered what weight oil it takes. I assume it is 90 wt gear oil? The plug is right there above the old "AC" logo.
Also, can anybody tell me what model this is, so I can try to find a manual for it? It's a recent acquire, and I don't know much about it.

Put a quart of 85w140 in (as it was all I could find around here)... Found it took the first pint without pushing anything out the level plug on the other side. Finally she started to let some "goop" out. I'm glad I topped her off... I kept adding it until what was coming out the level plug looked halfway decent. Mower ran good afterwards, too.

Oops, I forgot to ask if I needed to grease anything else. Also good to know; will hit that with a few squeezes of grease as well. |

Will, There are two plugs; the one on the right side is the fill plug, the one on the left side is the level plug. Left one is lower; fill right plug til it starts to run out the left plug. Very good mower. Made for AC by Brillion (I think).

The early 60" mowers were made by danuser, not brillion. This one is a laporte built model.

It's a pull type AC 160, those wheels can be flipped 180 degrees, and moved inboard, if you don't want to leave tracks. I use 90W140 in mine, no problem. There is also a grease fitting, below the gear box, in the back, to lube the 2 lower bearings.

SAE 140? Wow. Would not have expected that.
I assume you just fill it to the top of that fill port on the side of the gear box housing?
Also, thank you for the implement ID. Didn't look quite like the other 160s I have seen -- it seems much bigger from front to back than the others.

You can always use Jd or case ih. cornhead grease. This lube is almost like gear oil, but much better lube material.
