6volt to 12 volt

What happens when you put a 12 volt battery on a 6 volt system ??? Will it damage the starter & regulator ?? I"ve seen some 6 volt systems with 8 volt battery on them. The generator has been replaced with a alternator. Any info will be appreciated !! Thanks Bobby

Won't hurt starter. Alternator should have internal regulator. A 6V regulator won't work.Change light bulbs to 12V and you're good to go.

12 volts on a true 6 volt system is hard on the coil and the points but as for the generator system it will see an over changed battery and not be hurt. As for the 8 volt battery it would not have an alternator it would still be a generator. If it has an alternator it would in fact be a 12 volt system. 8 volt batteries at best are a band aid fix for other problems

I have a 12 volt alternator system on one tractor and an 8 volt battery in a generator system on the other (originally 6 volts of course). old is correct in that it shouldn't need the 8V. Both of them were hard starting tractors, apparently (6V would barely crank them). 12V system starts fantastic. 8V does alright as long as you keep fluid up in the battery.

if you put a 12 volt battery, you need a new 12 volt regulator. YOu can keep your 6 volt generator if its in good condition. Coil slould be changed to 12 volts, or add a dropping resistor to it. If you have an alternator, they normally are 12 volt and internal regulation.
